preview for Did Ariana Grande INSPIRE The Weeknd’s New Song?!

The Weeknd has shared the first teaser trailer for The Idol, his upcoming series for HBO Max. Starring Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye himself, The Idol will follow a female pop singer as she becomes romantically involved with a Los Angeles club owner and cult leader. Teasing drug-fueled hookup scenes, intense dance rehearsals, and lots of power moves, the trailer claims the show is “the sleaziest love story in all of Hollywood.”

The Idol was co-created by the Weeknd, Euphoria director Sam Levinson, and Reza Fahim, the Weeknd’s producing partner. An official release date has not been announced, but the teaser trailer says it’s “coming soon.”

“I just want to be a filmmaker,” the Weeknd, one of the biggest pop stars on the planet, told Rolling Stone back in 2020, “I want to make great cinema.” Once you’re on board with that mission, here is everything we know (so far) about The Idol.

Who Is Starring in The Idol?

The cast list is also looking pretty impressive. Australian singer-songwriter Troye Sivan will be a series regular, and Debby Ryan, of Disney channel fame, will also be holding a recurring role. Also, Jennie from mega K-Pop girl group BLACKPINK will make an appearance, although it’s unclear at the moment if this is more than a cameo.

Other members of the cast include include Hari Nef, Rachel Sennott, Nico Hiraga, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, and Anne Heche.

When Will The Idol Release?

A release date is still yet to be announced for The Idol, which will premiere on HBO Max. However, given that the show began filming in January and a trailer has only just been released, we are perhaps looking at a late 2022 or early 2023 release date.
