preview for Nope – official trailer (Universal Pictures)

Actor and director Jordan Peele, known for successfully shifting from comedy to horror—not to mention launching a horror renaissance in recent years—will not stand for any John Carpenter slander.

First, let’s back up. The hype is real for Peele’s third turn in the director’s chair with Nope releasing July 22. Social media is frenzied with good reviews and hot takes—especially Twitter.

“I know this is a hot take but at what point do we declare Jordan Peele the best horror director of all time?” comic book creator Adam Ellis posted on Wednesday morning. “Can you think of another horror director that had 3 great films, let alone 3 in a row? I can’t.”

Sounds like a compliment, right? Not to Peele. Although Peele was thankful for the message, in response he immediately acknowledged John Carpenter as the best horror director and ranked three of his favorite Carpenter movies: Halloween, Christine, and The Thing.

“Sir, please put the phone down I beg you,” Peele said in response on Twitter. “Sorry. I love your enthusiasm but I will just not tolerate any John Carpenter slander!!!”

Peele only broke into the horror world in 2017 with his directorial debut Get Out. And while Us, which followed was also excellent, you could debate whether or not these are true horror works at all. Thriller, in many ways, is equally, if not more applicable.

Carpenter, on the other hand, has been a horror king for over 40 years. He set the stage with the original Halloween—a movie that has bred many sequels as well as a continuation trilogy that will see its third and “final” movie premiere this October. (There’s also those two absolutely awful Rob Zombie remakes but, we won’t talk about how those almost ruined the franchise…)

So, I guess, we side with Peele? Nope is in theaters tomorrow.
