preview for The Evolution of The Joker

Were all of you comic-book heads sitting around, holding your breath, desperately waiting for Todd Phillips to announce a Joker sequel?

No? Too bad. In early June, Phillips announced a Joker sequel via his Instagram, which you can view here. The director posted two pictures to his account. The first is the title page to the upcoming film’s script, which reveals that its title is Joker: Folie à Deux. The second image shows Joaquin Phoenix, who won the Academy Award for Best Actor in his first turn as the Joker, reading the script in question. Now, according to Deadline, Joker: Folie à Deux will haunt us all on October 4, 2024.

If you’re actually still here, there is more to learn about this film. Earlier this summer, The Hollywood Reporter disclosed that Joker: Folie à Deux is a musical and that Lady Gaga was in serious talks to star as the villain’s on-and-off-again love interest, Harley Quinn, in the film. Now, Gaga has officially confirmed her involvement, tweeting a creepier-than-hell teaser for the film, which you can view below. Phew! If you ask us here at Esquire, we’ve long thought that Joker was a relatively soulless take on a storied villain, and that Phoenix would be smart to take his trophies and move on. Joker: Folie à Deux pivoting to a full-on musical will either make for an Oscar-baiting catastrophe, or something so damn insane that it gives the comic-book movie genre a much-needed shakeup. (We’re betting on the former. And please, Todd Phillips, have enough restraint to not reprise the staircase dance, only with Gaga’s Harley Quinn at the Joker’s side.)

Now, Phillips’s initial reveal of a Joker follow-up arrived as somewhat of a surprise, since neither Phillips or Phoenix seemed too keen on firing back up the franchise, especially after The Batman seemingly cast Barry Keoghan as yet another competing iteration of the Joker. The only hint we have as to where this film could actually take Arthur Fleck is in the title. Folie à deux is a French term that refers to a mental disorder impacting two or more individuals. So now we know that Quinn will join the Joker in the sequel, whether it’s with or against him. Or both. You officially have until October 2024 to learn how to correctly pronounce folie à deux.
