Oct. 20 (UPI)– After a flurry of injuries on defense, the Green Bay Packers are signing previous Houston Texans pass rush Whitney Mercilus to fortify their depth.

League sources informed ESPN, NFL Media and Sports Illustrated that Mercilus consented to a short-term agreement with the Packers. The group has yet to validate the contract.

” Nothing’s authorities,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur stated Wednesday. “Until then, I’m not going to state much about it.”

When asked whether the finalizing will end up being main quickly, LaFleur reacted: “We will see.”

Mercilus, who was launched by the Texans on Tuesday after costs 10 seasons with the franchise, denied more profitable deals to sign up with the Packers, according to reports. The Kansas City Chiefs were amongst the groups in the mix for the outdoors linebacker.

In 6 video games for the Texans this season, Mercilus– a first-round draft choice in 2012– notched 12 overall takes on, 3 sacks and 3 quarterback hits. His 57 profession sacks for Houston rank second in franchise history behind J.J. Watt, who signed up 101 sacks with the Texans.

The Packers were currently playing without Pro Bowl edge rush Za’Darius Smith, who played simply 18 snaps in the group’s season opener prior to going through back surgical treatment that has him out forever. Green Bay then lost outdoors linebacker Preston Smith to an oblique injury throughout Sunday’s video game versus the Chicago Bears

Packers outside linebacker Chauncey Rivers, on the other hand, suffered a season-ending knee injury previously this month, leaving the group thin at the position.
